[Img #31400]The Alcala de Xivert Chess Club will be holding the 1st Alcala-Alcossebre International Ranking Tournament on Friday 19th, Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September 2014 which will take place in the Servigrup Romana Hotel.

This competition will be valid for the Elo World Chess Federation and the organisers are planning to give some good prizes.  It is hoped that 100 top players will take part, with invitations to federations and clubs throughout the country, as well as to other countries such as Andorra, the South of France and Northern Italy, among others.

The Alcala de Xivert Chess Club is a ‘not for profit’ association.  The committee is chaired by Jose Luis Barreda Porcar, with Miguel Angel Loriente Cherta as Vice-chairman, Pascual Sancho Iturat, Treasurer, and members Juan García Road, Andrés Fernández José Sielva and Juan Manuel Lavernia.

The Association has 40 years of history.  There have been ups and downs, but there has never been a year when we have failed to hold a social tournament before Christmas nor one for teams after Saint Anthony.  You could say that the highpoint for the Chess Club (CEAX) was on 10th August 2013, when eight-times champion of Spain, Miguel Illescas Cordoba, held a simultaneous game and gave a lecture.

CEAX is very active.  Between players, those learning and their relatives, some 500 residents of Alcala are involved.

The Activities are:

Teaching:  We give free lessons to the town’s children and young people.  We have been doing this for more than 10 years and currently hold classes 3 days a week.
Leisure: Throughout the year we hold social championships among the club members, different tournaments on such occasions as the town’s fiestas and we also compete with other clubs in an interclub league.

We organise: Chess tournaments for all the festivities, (such as for example, the Sant Pere fiestas, Santa Teresa or Christmas among others), which their organisers ask us for.  We also hold simultaneous games.  We held a successful Live Chess game.

We hold: Conferences, (at Christmas we have a Campus with a wide range of activities – the next year will be our 4th).

And we are also promoters:  You can visit our Facebook page: Club dEscacs Alcala de Xivert.  There you will find, as well as photos, information referring to CEAX.  Problems to improve the level, chronicles of our most interesting matches, classifications, etc.

Our strength is that we have many people behind us, supporting us.  This brings us together.  The Council, with its regular grant, as well as all the help from its councillors, Pascual Herrera and Joanba Herrera, together with María Agut and Ricardo Aguilar.  In fact, the whole Council, with the mayor Francisco Juan Mars leading, supports us.  And, of course, all the students families, who leave their children in our hands for these difficult hourly classes, they all give us a lot of confidence.  The businesses who support us (there were 115 on the publicity poster, helping us financially.

Now is the time to talk of opportunities.

We must not forget our approaching 1st Hotel Servigroup Romana Alcala Alcossebre International Ranking Tournament.  It could be a point from which the world looks at us, and sees us organising it well.  Then year by year, it could go on growing and becoming established.  Another important point is how easy it will be for our players to gain the Elo International Chess Federation award.  Youngsters of any age will now not have to go to Tarragona nor Valencia to play to gain the official Elo.  They will have it here in Alcossebre.

And above all, it will promote Alcossebre.  Who knows?  It is one of the most heavenly holiday destinations in Spain.  Where else in the country can you find better beaches?  Or the Sierra d’Irta Natural Park, where the essence of the Mediterranean is preserved, from when a squirrel arrived jumping from tree to tree from the Pyrenees to Gibraltar?  (There now only remains virgin land between Peñiscola and Alcossebre).
