If a year ago El Repiquet displayed the biggest drum in the world to thousands of people in Alcala de Xivert, “Lo Gaspatxer,s” first birthday could not have been better. And the drummers group took advantage of the anniversary to show another “gift” for the town to the world. The biggest drum in the world is now resplendent with a work by the painter Álex Mirasol on one side, paying tribute to the town.
At an event with the mayor Francisco Juan, the local parish priest mosen Carlos and the head of the Culture department María Agut present, El Repiquet presented the new view of their famous drum to the world. Members of El Repiquet were also present, led by their committee. José Ramón Pitarch and Paco Bruñó represented the group.
José Ramón Pitarch summarised the feeling of the group by pointing out that “this painting which we are announcing today really pays homage to our town”. “If we made our dream of having the biggest drum in the world come true last year here in Alcala, we have now made the skin of “Lo Gaspatxer” really excel with this work of art. It adds a representation of the principal values of our municipality to its extraordinary qualities”, he explained.
The local parish priest, mosen Carlos, spoke publicly of his admiration for Álex Mirasol’s work: “When the members of El Repiquet showed me the first outlines, I said then that it seemed to me to be an admirable work. Now, when I see the result of the project on the side of the drum, it seems even more impressive”.
Francisco Juan, the Alcalà Mayor, expressed his appreciation of the work and congratulated El Repiquet on their initiative. “The truth is that Mirasol’s work makes a real impact. I have said on previous occasions that El Repiquet is an outstanding group for constant activity and social work, now, seeing the painting which they are showing to us, I can say no more than that it is an honour to count on them to put new energy into the town’s social life”, he explained. The mayor reminded the group that “the Council, and I say this with pride, will always be at your side for whatever projects you want to take forward”.

Mirasol’s work is extraordinary
The young painter from Hijar (Teruel) has captured on the more than two and a half metres diameter of one of the sides of the biggest drum in the world, a collage of pictures which represent the most iconic places in the municipality. The picture shows elements such as the Xivert Castle, the Bell Tower, the coastal path, the beaches, the lighthouse, Santa Lucia chapel. The painting is a genuine spectacle to see. The figure of Christ by Dalí dominates a picture which has already received so much praise and which all the residents and visitors will shortly be able to enjoy by visiting it in the church of San Juan Bautista.
