The Third Castell de Xivert Tournament – The Alcala A team were the runners up in the Alevín class.
The Tortosa team beat Alcala A on penalties in the final
The Third Castell de Xivert 7-a-side Football Tournament started on Friday 18th April with the matches in the Alevin class, which provided a great sporting spectacle the crowd of people who gathered at the football pitch to enjoy the games.
In some heart-stopping semifinals, the Alcala A team won by a convincing 5-0 against the team from Roda, whilst Tortosa suffered by drawing with La Senia 1-1, and therefore had to resort to penalties, when Tortosa succeeded in getting into the final to face the hosts.
In the final, the Alcala A Alevin young players showed great dedication and self-respect, as they came to the match having played all morning with no substitutes due to injuries. They showed their strength by drawing 1-1 with Tortosa, which led to the penalties lottery.
In the penalty shoot-out from 11 metres, the cross fell on Alcala, with Tortosa winning the most exciting penalty shoot-out anyone can remember in the history of this tournament.
The mayor of Alcala de Xivert, Francisco Juan Mars, presided over the awarding of the trophies, together with Sports councillor, Joanba Herrera, and representatives of the Friends of Alcossebre, sponsors of the tournament and of the Alcala Football Club.
Francisco Juan Mars remarked on the large number of people who had come to the matches. Over 700 people had come through the gates during the tournament, “which is a very positive result for the town, as it helps to make us known to the neighbouring towns and some of them come from quite some distance away. Through children’s sports, we create cooperation and links between the towns, at the same time as encouraging our young people to take part in physical activity, and to learn about sporting competition, the rules of the game and teamwork”.
The Alcala Football Club thanked all the teams for taking part, Alcala B, Roda E, Futur Vinaros, Jubelama, Vinaros, La Senia, Sempre Rapit, Alcala A, Rafalafena, Tortosa, Futur Casteelló, RAC Vilareal, having achieved full participation with 12 teams, which added up to 125 players. This bodes well for the interest and level of competition in this, the third year of the tournament.
After the competition in the Alevin class, on Saturday, 19th April it was the turn of the Prebenjaín group, with the Futur Castelló, Baix Maestrat, La Senial, C D. Roda, Jubelama, Alcala A and Alcala B teams taking part.
The organisers were very pleased with the success of the tournament and particularly with how parents and children threw themselves into it. Now plans start for next year’s tournament.
