Street Traders attack three local police officers in Alcossebre
On 10th August, 6 street traders attacked and injured three local police officers. Street, or “blanket top”, traders are seen as becoming more and more aggressive, which is making the task of the police more difficult, if that is possible. And yesterday the officers endured moments of great tension when they saw that they were surrounded by about 40 of the street traders and that one of the officers was being pushed around by the rest of the traders. The officers then had to leave the area so that the conflict did not get out of hand and lead to serious disorder.
The Alcala de Xivert-Alcossebre Local Police force has been trying to bring the “Blanket Top” sales in Alcossebre to an end since the beginning of summer, but their efforts are being outpaced by the great number of street traders and the situation is becoming more and more unsustainable.
The Local Security Committee, formed by the Subdelegación of the Government, the Guardia Civil, the Police Councillor, the Chief of the Local Police and the Mayor, have been dealing with this delicate matter, insisting that although the Local Police is taking action, without the cooperation of other forces it is impossible for the Local Police officers alone to combat selling in the streets. This subject has also been dealt with at provincial level in the Castellón Government Subdelegación during a meeting with representatives from all the coastal towns in the province.
