Seven municipalities will benefit by being included in the Diputación’s annual archaeological excavations campaign
The work on the sites will enable remains to be recovered and included in the heritage offer of each locality.
Pons: “We are preserving the historical knowledge of the province and making it available to the councils and citizens”.
In the next fortnight, work will begin on the site of the Santa Lucia chapel in Alcala de Xivert-Alcossebre
The archaeological excavation campaign has already started at ‘Los Morrones’, in Cortes de Arenoso. Some 15 days after this ends, work at the site of Santa Lucia in Alcala de Xivert will begin and successively up to October the sites at other places included in the campaign: Vinaròs, Montán, Serra d´En Garcerán, Cabanes and Zucaina. The historical remains found during these excavations will provide a good profile of the first settlers in the province, and this knowledge will be added to the heritage offer of each town, providing better resources to improve the tourism.
The Diputación delegate, José Pons, explained that “this work clearly shows our dedication to serve the municipalities and aims to add value to their potential by knowing their origins better, and using this knowledge as a tourist attraction. Thus, we are preserving our heritage at the same time as we are avoiding abandoning works of art which have great potential to attract visitors, particularly boosting inland municipalities, but also the bigger towns on the coast”.
The excavations in the Diputación’s annual campaign are included in the investigation projects which it is developing with the different councils in whose municipalities the sites are situated. The project is also linked to two projects I+D+i of the Science and Innovation Ministry.
Excavation and exhibitions in Alcala de Xivert
Within a fortnight, the Diputación will start the final excavation campaign planned by the Archaeology Service at the Santa Lucia site in Alcala de Xivert. This is a settlement occupied at two periods in time, one during the Bronze Age and the other in the Iron Age, with interesting ceramics from both periods as well as metal objects.
“In this case and in order to bring the excavations closer to the people and show the excellent results of the three campaigns which have already been carried out, an exhibition showing the principal materials found during work at the site opened this weekend in the CESAL Building. The exhibition was promoted by the Council with the collaboration of the Castellón Diputación as the institution which carried out the scientific management of the work”, Deputy Pons explained.
July: Puig de la Misericòrdia in Vinaròs and el Calvario de Montán
Next month work is planned to continue at the site of Puig de la Misericòrdia de Vinaròs and at the Calvario de Montán, both with financial collaboration from the respective councils.
Excavations started at these two sites two years ago and have yielded fruitful results about the time they passed through from the Ancient Iron Age to the Iberian Culture, as well as the effect the Mediterranean towns had on the transformation of society in the area in the middle of the first millennium BC.
August: Sierra d´En Garcerán and Cabanes
After the 15th August, work will resume at the final Bronze Age settlement in Tossal de la Vial in the Sierra d’en Garceran, the only site excavated in the Province from this time and of interest because of how well the materials have been preserved. Also at this site and as is becoming usual throughout the summer, there will be exhibitions of the ceramic materials found during the excavations in the Council’s halls. The field work is being carried out by volunteer students from different universities in Spain and the local councils will pay for their stay while the campaign lasts.
This will also be the last campaign at the El Mortorum site in Cabanes, a settlement where work has been going on for the last ten years and which shows similar characteristics to those at los Morrones but with greater interest as this settlement, which also shows that it was occupied at times similar to those at Santa Lucia, is linked to mineral activity and at the beginning of commerce with the Phoenicians.
October: the campaign ends at 'Los Cabañiles', Zucaina
Finally the work will continue in October in the VIth century BC burial mound in los Cabañiles, Zucaina, a curious archaeological site composed of different cremation tombs and a series of annex constructions which could be related to the burial mound and which will be the object of this campaign’s excavations.
