The PSPV asks for the Torre Ebri to be restored

[Img #42632]The Municipal Socialist group has registered a proposal for debate at the next council meeting requesting that the competent administrations should restore the iconic watch tower.

The Torre Ebri was built in the 16th century and formed part of the Xivert Castle vigilance and warning system.  Its role was relevant until the beginning of the 17th century as a defence against pirate attacks.

The tower is situated 496 metres above sea level in the Sierra d’Irta.  It has a circular form and is 9 metres high, standing at the top of the mountain and build of masonry.

The monument was declared of Cultural Interest, said Joan Ronchera, the socialist spokesperson, “and is one of the most important defence elements on the coast and part of the Valencian Cultural Heritage.  At present the Torre Ebri is in a lamentable deteriorated architectural state and a possible danger to any visitor”.  The historian “last December said that the Generalitat should take on the restoration of the Torre Badum situated in the Peñíscola municipality and the restoration work of our watch town, with the cooperation of the Diputación and our Council”.
