The Alcala de Xivert-Alcossebre branch of Manos Unidas organised a charity stall

On the 4th August, the Alcala de Xivert-Alcossebre Manos Unidas organised a charity stall in Alcossebre Market, to sell cocas, tarts and cakes, and a variety of items donated by businesses and other supporters, together with the Manos Unidas 2015 Campaign material.

Manos Unidas is a Non Governmental Development Organisation (ONGD) of volunteers, part of the Catholic Church, and was formed in1960.  It has 56 years’ experience of working in the cooperation sector in countries in the South, through development projects, and in Spain, through events to raise awareness.

Every year they publish the results of each Campaign, analysed by external auditors (available on the web), and provide accounts for their members.  Transparency in their management is a guarantee for Manos Unidas.

One of its main values is austerity, as only 5.1% of their income is used for administrative and structural costs.  This is possible because it is a Development NGO run by volunteers, with 71 Delegations throughout Spain, with very efficient management.

It is an organisation with a great deal of social support, given that 81.6% of its funds come from the private sector.  The remaining 18.4% comes from the public sector (2014).

The organisation has two priorities: financing development in the South and making the people of Spain aware of the problem.

Most of their income (93.4% in 2014) is devoted to financing development projects in the South, financing which takes place with no intermediaries.

The projects they prioritise are centred on five main areas: agriculture, health, education, social and promoting women (a dynamic which is present in the other four areas).  Participation in the future of the project and its viability are essential.

In 2014, they devoted 4.9% of their funds to raising awareness among the Spanish population.  This approach costs very little but a great amount of human resources are invested in it.  It is directed at the world of education (pupils, teachers, colleges, educators, universities), at communications through the media and at public administrations.

During 2015 in Alcala two other activities have been organised “The Charity Sandwich Supper” (an opportunity for public fasting) and “Totxo Day”, (for the 2015 Campaign).

Manos Unidas thanks everyone, businesses, the Council and volunteers who have made so much possible with their work, support and cooperation in all that this event will make possible.
