The 3rd “Tomata de Penjar” Fair held in Alcala de Xivert on the 17th and 18th October
The initiative originated between the Alcala de Xivert Association of Producers and Marketers of the “Tomata de Penjar”, created on 23rd March 2007, and the Alcala de Xivert-Alcossebre Council, with the aim of promoting this local product.
The quality of the product has enabled it to win recognition with the CV Quality Mark in 2008, and the award of the Marca Parcs Naturals, thanks to its organic and gastronomic values.
The threat of rain early in the morning did not spoil the official opening on Saturday, 17th October at 11:30h. The music of the “Lo Xular” group of Pipes and Drums accompanied the procession, led by the town’s mayor, Francisco Juan Mars, together with members of the corporation, at the opening. Also in attendance were authorities from towns such as Les Coves, Albocasser and Peñiscola. Also the presence of the government delegate, David Barelles, must be noted, as he has supported this fair by coming to it every year since it started.
Francisco Juan Mars pointed out that “this is our opportunity to make our products known, not just the tomatoes, which is the most representative, but also our oil”.
He went on to say that “the “Tomata de Penjar” Fair shows us off to the whole area and the province, and those who visit us can learn about our gastronomy and our monuments at the same time in one weekend”.
The mayor recognised the work of all those who had made the event possible. “It has taken the work of many people to make this fair possible and I give them my deepest thanks”.
During the two days there were over 60 stalls in the central streets of Alcala de Xivert, offering the visitor crafts, cakes and pastries, wines, and above all the “Hanging tomatoes”. There were exhibitions of bonsais, trees in the municipality and vintage radios, as well as cookery demonstrations given by Restaurante Can Roig on the Saturday and by the Restaurante Picaporte and La Taberna during Sunday, with their recipes based on local products.
In order to promote the local artistic historic heritage, there were also guided visits to the Bell Tower and the parish church. Because of the fair, visitors could also take advantage of special menus available in the local restaurants.
