The Serra d’Irta Handball Club announced its teams for the coming season
On 4th December, the Serra d’Irta Handball Club announced their teams at a club dinner, with parents and players meeting in a local restaurant.
During the event, the chairman of the club, Mari Luz Foix, thanked everyone for their efforts and work keeping the club moving forward.
During the dinner, the players and their trainers were introduced one by one as this year “for the first time, we have more than one team, we have three”. The club has a cadet boys team trained by Marc, with 9 lads, a cadet girls team directed by Nico and finally a mixed junior team with 9 girls and 3 boys trained by Maneu and Bego this season is a special trainer for goalkeepers, Ana Roca.
As a friendly, welcoming gesture to the new players, they were given a fighting name when they were presented with the team sweater.
The Club chairman said that “everyone is longing to see how the club grows, the girls who have come from Bego and Miriam’s school have spent two years just training and have now entered into the competitive world with much enthusiasm”.
Ricardo Aguilar, the sports councillor, represented the Alcala de Xivert-Alcossebre Council at the dinner, and in his speech encouraged all those present to keep on working with this positive frame of mind. He also pointed out that in the club “each and every person is important, from the players to the management, and he congratulates them all”.
Currently the girls cadet team is fifth in the provincial league “and at least half of the team are new, among whom some have never played before”.
The history of handball in Alcala de Xivert goes back to the activities outside school hours during the 88/89 year, and continued like this for several years on a more or less regular basis. It was then in 2009 that it became a club officially. “The best season was in 2012/2013 when we were unbeaten in the league and also won the Trofeo de la Carchofa”
In its history as a club, there are already top players in the sport, like Fran Bosch and Oriol Maneu, who in the years when they could not make a team played for teams in Castellón, and Julia Martorell, “who is studying in Cheste with a grant and has been signed up for the Onda team”.
Trainers
Nico has played for teams in Benicarló and Vinaròs and in the Uruguayan team.
Marc Martorell, is currently playing in the Vinaros team, and achieved a place in the National First as a senior. It is his first year as a trainer in Alcala de Xivert “they are a bit ‘wild’ but very good”.
Maneu, has been playing this sport for 9 years, and has played in all the categories, including being selected for the Autonomous League.
