Alcala-Alcossebre Council continues the task to detect the leakage on the Las Fuentes beach and thanks people for their cooperation

An up-date meeting was held on 10th August with experts, municipal representatives and tourism businesses

Alcala-Alcossebre Council continues working to detect the source of the bacteriological leakage which led to the closure of Las Fuentes beach for bathing last July.  To locate the source, analytical controls of the water are being carried out periodically, the pump chambers are being repaired and they have investigated and controlled the repair of pipes in the principal sewage network dependent on the EPSAR, sewers, chambers and drains have been inspected in the Jai Alai, Pedrera, Paseo Marítimo, Avenida Manila and Avenida Les Fonts roads.  Also tests and analyses have been carried out inside the Marina, Las Fuentes, Arcos and Club Deportivo hotel complexes.  They are also investigating irrigation wells and water extraction near the area and are continuing to expand the area of operations.

Experts from FACSA, the water service concession holder, said that “the work is being carried out systematically and meticulously, consisting of inspecting the whole network, both at the public drainage level and at private installations.”  The Mayor Francisco Juan, emphasised “the cooperation of residents and private people when buildings and installations are being inspected, which will have to continue because we are going to have to continue checking and because it is essential that, if any resident suspects some deficiency in the network, that they communicate it to prove whether that is what is causing the problem”.

Analyses carried out during the last weeks certify that bathing conditions are perfect so that the Council will continue keeping the waters contained in a sand dike which prevents the spring water - where the contamination was detected – from reaching the sea.  Later, using pumping equipment, it will be treated in the municipal sewage plant, with EPSAR’s authorisation.

All these matters were discussed at the up-date meeting which was attended by municipal experts, officers of FACSA and EPSAR, corporation councillors and business representatives, so that everyone would know how it is progressing.  The Mayor Francisco Juan reminded them that “we have been unstinting in our efforts to avoid any repetition of the beach being contaminated and also to locate the cause as soon as possible, which is essential to ensure that the contamination is not repeated”.
