Alcossebre said farewell to Carnival 2018 with crowds taking part

Saturday, 17th February 2018, saw both the Pets’ Carnival and the Children’s Carnival take place.

For the sixth year, the Alcovet Veterinary Clinic organised the pets’ fancy dress competition as part of Alcossebre Carnival, and it has become an unmissable date for those who love animals and entertainment.  The Plaza de la Mola once again became the stage for the best outfits, frequently with both pet and owner in coordinated dress, which made it a very colourful morning.

Although the most contestants were dogs, of all breeds and sizes, there was also space for apaches on horseback in war-paint.  Four-footed footballers, cowboys, a Roman Caesar, stuffed bees, ballerinas, and the most adorable Freddy Krueger all paraded along the cat-walk to try to win the judges’ approval with grace and originality.

A collection was made during the event for funds for sterilisation campaigns, in cooperation with animal shelters.

Later that afternoon, a big crowd joined the colourful Children’s’ Carnival, which started from the Plaza Vista Alegre and paraded through the town with music.

To the rhythm of the band and the Alcozancos stilt-walkers, the great procession, filled the place with characters from the animated films, superheroes, and  all kinds of animals, in an entertaining  cavalcade presided over by the Carnival Children’s Queen, África Marin Seijas, who led the procession in her carriage, accompanied by a crowd of elves and fairies.

Many mothers and fathers joined in the fiesta, bringing the smallest children to see the imaginative fancy-dresses and to join in the excitement of a party and entertainment afternoon for the tinies.

The procession was rewarded at the end with a delicious hot chocolate for the the participants and their companions.

The Alcossebre Carnival came to an end on Saturday night – a magical night when the town said farewell to Don Carnal and all its fun until next year.  After the big Alcala Carnival fiesta, the groups paraded around the streets of Alcossebre with a great desire to amuse themselves, having overcome their original nerves, so that this time it was just a case of enjoying themselves and throwing themselves completely into Carnival.

This time, to the eleven groups who had taken part in the previous week’s Carnival, there were added many more with truly carnival outfits and a certain air of anarchy and heterogeneity, which increased the cavalcade even more spectacular with its imagination and colourfulness.

The weather, with its morning mists and its cloudy afternoon, finally joined in the fiesta and offered a typical Alcossebre night, with an ideal temperature for the celebrations.

All along the procession route, mainly in the Cami l’Atall and the calle San José, in front of the medical centre where the Sambódromo was situated, people gathered in great numbers to enjoy the spectacle of the costumes and the choreography shown by the groups.  This was the point in which the participating groups could show of their costumes under the lights, with the presentations and the music provided by Tomás and Ximo.

Once the parade was over they all went to the marquee set up at the beginning of the Paseo Marítimo, where the party continued into the early hours of the morning with a band and disco for the final farewell to Carnival 2018, to start counting the days until the next carnival.
