The delegation from the “Comenius” European programme is in Alcala de Xivert to enjoy a few very special days and, at the same time, take part in the many activities and visits which are planned. The visitors are pupils and teachers from various countries in Europe - Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Turkey. Alcala de Xivert is representing Spain in this very special and enriching initiative.
The “Lo Campanar” Secondary School in Alcala de Xivert has therefore become the nerve centre for the activities of the Comenius European project.
The delegation was welcomed on 23rd April by Council members, councillors José Colom and María Agut. The meeting room in the Casa de Cultura was the scene for an event where both Colom and Agut thanked the Comenius participants for coming.
Previously, the 32 members of the party from different countries had been received by the Alcala school teachers and pupils, who all entered wholeheartedly into providing a wide range of activities.
The Comenius party enjoyed different workshops and activities including a visit to the Sierra de Irta coves, they admired the majesty of the Alcala heritage with the “Campanar” bell tower and the church as the main attractions and of course they were shown the enormous drum. Lorena Martínez, head teacher of the “Lo Campanar” secondary school, explained that “we also want them to learn how our centre operates, how many pupils we have, what the ratios are,... so that they can learn about all the aspects relating to our pupils’ education”. At the same time, there are also trips planned to Valencia, the Vall d’Uixó caves and iconic places in Alcossebre like Santa Lucía. The visit will end on Friday night with a farewell dinner in the school’s premises, when 100 people will be present and the visitors will be presented with typical products of the area such as the ‘hanging’ tomatoes, olive oil and oranges.
“It is a very enriching experience, which involves a lot of work but which has given us the opportunity of learning about different cultures, in all their aspects from the educational to the social”, Martínez added. The Alcala public school has been taking part in the Comenius European project for two years, together with 4 other countries, with Spain, or more specifically Alcala, the last stop of the project, which covers many disciplines.
