The Alcala-Alcossebre Council and Adif are putting the finishing touches to preparations for the reopening of the Alcala train station waiting  room which has been closed for seventeen years.  On 3rd May the general sub-director of stations, Juan Cano, visited the station, with Adif regional engineers, the Mayor Francisco Juan, and councillors María Agut and Alejandra Roca, to check that the room and the toilets are now ready after the maintenance, cleaning and painting works carried out by the company.  They have also installed benches and waste bins so that the facility can be opened, all that remains is for Adif and the Council to sign the documentation.

The Mayor Francisco Juan explained that “on the part of the Council, we are cooperating by carrying out the maintenance of the facility, with the control and vigilance of the facility by the Local Police.  It seems to us that in compensation it is important to provide a service to our residents and visitors who use the train”.  On the part of Adif, it was said that “the agreement we have reached with the Alcala-Alcossebre Council is a model for other municipalities to copy and is based on cooperation so that the station can be returned for the citizens’ use”.

The agreement will be completed with the cession of a side room which will be used as a store for use by the Council, and which will be prepared as a tourist information point, installing information panels about tourism initiatives, bus timetables for connection with Alcossebre, etc.  From Adif, there is the added promise that the lift which connects both platforms will be put into operation, as well as the tiling in the underpass being repaired..

The Council has also asked Adif to mediate with Renfe so that ticket vending machines can be installed.

“The imminent increased frequency of local trains on the Vinaros-Castellón line will make it possible for us to have 12 trains in both directions which will stop at our station, so, if we  also provide the service to sell and validate the tickets, we shall be offering our residents the full service, in a completely renovated station, and we hope this will become real very soon”, Juan pointed out.
