Alcala-Alcossebre Council continues to promote recycling with the First Environmental Sustainability Week

Alcala-Alcossebre Council continues to be a leader with regard to the collection of waste and its support for selective recycling and is going one step further with the organisation of the First Sustainability Week, to be held from the 24th to the 28th September and which will involve all sectors of the population.  The different activities planned are focussed above all on making people aware of the need to recycle correctly, with special emphasis on biological waste.  With regard to this, Alcala has been a pilot town in the Valencian Community, by in 2015 setting up the use of intelligent bins for organic waste and putting itself five years ahead of the implementation of the autonomous and European standards for this type of waste, which will become effective in 2020 for towns with more than 5,000 inhabitants.

Councillor José Colom explains that “since 2002, we have been strongly supporting the implementation of selective collection bins in both town centres and, in 2015, with the intelligent bins for organic waste.  All this has made us the leading municipality regarding the collection of waste within the Valencian Community”.  This week will mark the need to continue training and making people aware so that their recycling is carried out correctly as “it is calculated that 40% of the waste is generated by households, so that if we do not teach all sectors of the population how to do it correctly, the fact that the administrations are putting a lot of pressure on us is of no use and, therefore, we are trying to reach everyone with this week’s campaign”, Colom explained.  The director of the C1 Consortium, Silvia López Romero, pointed out that “we have proved that we make people aware if we aim the contents and the message at the different sectors and, with this First Sustainability Week, the Alcala-Alcossebre Council is applying exactly this approach”.

On the 24th and 27th there will be informative talks for businesses, the hostelry sector and residents, on Tuesday 25th, the activity will be taken to the schools where educational models and actions will be shared so that the students know about the carbon effect and the glass-house effect.  On Friday, 28th, a visit to the Cervera evaluation plant has been organised, with free bus transport and activities for those taking part.  Also, for all those attending the activities, each person will receive a brown bucket specially recommended for collection organic waste.  On Wednesday, 26th, a technical day has been organised for institutional authorities, engineers and professionals in the sector which will be attended by Joan Piquer, the general director of Climate Change and Environmental Quality who will give a presentation on “Selective collection of organic waste.  Biological waste”.  Other presentations will focus on the pilot experiences of the C1 Consortium, its installations and the results of the C1 management project.  The day will be closed by the deputy for the sustainability area of the Castellón Diputación, Mario García and the Mayor of Alcala-Alcossebre, Francisco Juan.
