Javier Moliner has announced that there will soon be approval for extraordinary financial aid so that the province’s councils which have suffered damage from the effects of the ‘gota fria’ can repair the damage.  This is what the president of the Castellón Diputación will do having been in continuous contact with mayors in the worst affected areas during the last few days of intense rain.

Moliner assured that “once the intense rain episode of the last 48 hours is over, and fortunately it has happened without recording any personal damage, it is time to try to repair the damage caused by the rain.  Therefore, from the Diputación we are now announcing that we are going to start a line of aid so that the councils can recover the costs incurred in bringing their municipalities, towns and cities back to normality.  After the rain they are going to have to repair paving, repair street furniture, and definitely repair public assets affected and damaged by the rain”.

A whole team to attend the emergencies

To cope with the emergencies which have arisen from this “gota fría” episode, the Diputación’s Fire Brigade department has four professional fire stations situated in Benicarló, Oropesa del Mar, Nules and Segorbe and the five volunteer firemen fire stations in Onda, Lucena del Cid, Benassal, Morella and Atzeneta del Maestrat.

There are a total of 26 fire engines supported by 52 teams for bailing out the water divided between 10 electric pumps, 34 motorised pumps and 8 turbopumps.  Among the electric pumps there are 2 fast-flow water bailing pumps and a special one to suck up solids and mud.

The Generalitat’s Forest Firemen Units also have 15 fire engines assigned to the Castellón Consortium.

And the Castellón Provincial Consortium of Firemen (CPBC) has a big team throughout the province prepared to provide immediate action if necessary.  The activation of resources will be carried out gradually based on the immediate needs of the moment and each area, determined by the evolution of the situation.

Specialised teams

Together with these resources, the Fire Brigades Consortium has also activated the URM (Mountain Rescue Unit) and the URA (Water Rescue Unit) with teams distributed in the four professional fire brigade fire stations.

The URA has a towed vehicle fitted with an inflatable rescue dinghy and the rest of the material necessary to attend to any rescue operation on land or sea.

The URA also has:

– 2 zodiac shallow draft rescue boats

– 3 rescue jet skis

– 5 rescue boats in areas where there is stagnant water

– 3 10-metre twin-engine semi-rigid boats for rescues at sea based in the ports of Benicarló, Oropesa and Borriana.

Three units of volunteers from the Castellón Diputación Civil Protection to carry out preventative routes throughout the province, and the Civil Protection Logistic Unit will be available to take immediate action providing logistical support to the firemen team.  Also the CPBC’s Machinery and Logistics Units will be operative, with 3 diggers with buckets and one mixed.

Advice for the people

Castellón Provincial Consortium of Firemen want to urge people in general so that, where it is not strictly necessary, they do not travel on the roads.  Should they have to, in no case should they try to cross flooded areas, nor river beds and gullies although they may think they can do so.

It is also important to plan activities in the mountains especially in areas close to river beds and gullies.

At home, it is important to check gutters and drain pipes, as well as ensuring that the drains from outside terraces are clear so that water doesn’t accumulate.

Note:  It is important to keep informed of the meteorological updates and pre-emergency or emergency actions through Aemet and GVA112.  In the event of emergency situations call 112.  From the Provincial Coordination Centre of the CPBC, they will manage the coordination with the AVSRE (Valencian Agency for Safety and Response to Emergencies), the rest of the administrations involved and the whole action team of the Castellón Diputación’s department of Fire Brigades.
