Alcala-Alcossebre investigates the principal damage caused by the rain to the sea front infrastructure and the rural roads

Mayor Francisco Juan: “Recent drainage work, gutter cleaning and updating roads carried out has prevented there being greater damage”

Two days after the red alert for rain and storms had ended, the Alcala-Alcossebre Council has already made an evaluation of the damage caused by the 300 litres per square metre recorded in the area.  The damage was focussed principally on the sea front infrastructure, such as sections of the pedestrian Coastal Path which have completely disappeared next to the river San Miguel and along the Cargador beach.  Sections of the wooden walkway were badly damaged and posts on the La Coloma river bed, the Cargador beach and the Moro beach, as well as showers and beach furniture.  Also the work which was being carried out to provide a pavement in front of the Jaume I campsite was badly damaged.  With regard to rural roads and cattle paths, there are areas next to the river beds where the force of the water had carried entire sections of roads away and cattle paths suffered landslides of stones blocking the way.  The municipal buildings which suffered the greatest damage were the Espai d’Oci and the Multi-sports Pavilion in Alcala, with damage to the roof.  At the same time as the evaluation of the damage, work is continuing with machinery to make the rural roads passable to the cattle and agriculture facilities.  In the first hours of rain, the Diputación Provincial was already carrying out work to improve the roads.

Mayor Francisco Juan insisted that “it proved that the cleaning of gullies, the care of rural roads and recent drainage works, as in the Plaza Constitución in Alcossebre, have worked preventing the damage from being greater.  If the Council had not carried this out, it would have been a complete disaster”.  Juan also said that “the speed with which warnings were communicated and measures such as closing the schools, meant that it was possible to keep people forewarned and this prevented anyone being hurt”.  The Mayor repeated his thanks to the Firemen, the Local Police, the Guardia Civil, staff of the Services brigade and to the cleaning, drainage and drinking water companies.

HELP

The Council will set up a process to request the assistance announced by the Generalitat Valenciana and the Diputación Provincial.  The Mayor indicated that “we also hope to have assistance from other bodies such as the Ministries and Confederación Hidrográfica del Jucar, as the most affected areas such as the river beds, river mouths and the sea front are under their jurisdiction”.
