In Alcala and Alcossebre, the local Council has been installing protective measures in the centres, following recommendations from Central Government, to prevent attacks and damage being caused when there are a lot of people there. This is a measure which was imposed following the terrorist attacks in August 2017.
In April 2018, removable bollards were installed in Alcossebre where the summer market is held and they are now being installed in the historic centre of Alcala. Until now, when there have been crowds of people during festivals, etc, Alcala-Alcossebre Local Police parked vehicles in the accesses to block the entrance for any other vehicles. At the suggestion of the officer charged with material management, bollards in keeping with the historic centre’s architecture have been acquired and they will be installed at times when they are needed. In fact, the fittings are being installed in Juan Barceló, Santa Barbara and San Fernando streets and the Church square.
Mayor Francisco Juan said that “our residents’ safety is very important and, even more so, at times when there are large crowds. Therefore, taking into account that Alcala’s historic centre holds very popular events during the patronal fiestas, the Hanging Tomato Fair, the Christmas Market, processions, the Passion play, etc., it was necessary to fence in the area taking the aesthetic of the space into consideration”. Juan thanked “the Local Police for their continual work and adding their proposals to improve safety for our citizens”.
