Alcossebre

Two Entertaining Choir Evenings at Alcossebre´s San Cristóbal Church on Thursday and Friday, May 10th and 11th

"Estupendo“ , great, - according to Eddy McKay the only Spanish word known by Maurice Webb, the conductor -, that´s what everybody was thinking at the end  of a once more magnificent concert given by The Alcossebre Singers.
Nice to see that the number of singers has increased again – even the men´s
number -, undoubtedly due to the conductor´s not only musical but also social  abilities. Nice, too, that the main concert was given again in the church.
We took part in an entertaining musical voyage around the world, with well known and less known melodies, quiet and sentimental, funny and buzzing ones.
22 songs were joined in different sections which were introduced, in English and Spanish, by well known witty Eddy McKay.
It would be a bit boring to speak about all the songs, so let me just mention a few:
A boasting Maurice Webb walking proudly across the church as the man who broke the bank of Monte Carlo; The White Rose of Athens, one of the most famous songs of Nana Mouskouri, who the conductor has fallen in love with, as we were told by Eddy McKay, the quick Jamaica Farewell with Derek Johnson´s Bongo contribution; the last train to San Fernando, where the train´s whistling could be heard; a Viva España where everybody had to join the chorus; the Irish Rover where several local „dignataries“ were mentioned and a brilliant Floral Dance with Vivienne´s assistant Ken playing an euphonium, which led to an encore.
The choir´s work was really great. They all must have worked hard, but I think they, too, enjoyed the work. The singers happy faces were the best demostration.
So, thanks to everybody involved in the concert s success, which has also been a success as to the fund raising and its about 525´euros, which will go to the church, the Pensioners and to the local Red Cross.
Now we are all looking forward to the choir s next outings.
