Alcala de Xivert=Alcossebre Council put a lot of positive value on holding the Second Week of Environmental Sustainability, organised by the Environment and Citizen Participation Departments.
As in the first year, with the same aim of reaching all sectors of the population, there were talks and activities for residents which explained what climate change is and what measures can be taken to fight it, such as reducing the consumption of plastics and textile products or putting a brake on food waste. Activities were carried out in the educational centres for pupils in Primary year 4, showing them how climate change will influence the transformation of our environment and inviting them to express in drawings what they would demand to make it slow down. Finally, on Saturday 28th September, there was a Clean Up day for collecting rubbish in the Sierra de Irta during which the participants received information on the great quantity of rubbish existing in natural environments, due to lack of awareness. The Second Sustainability Week was held within the framework of the different requirements, at world level, of the Climate Emergency.
Mayor Francisco Juan said that “our municipality has been a pioneer in setting up intelligent containers and other technological improvements to improve selective recycling and the management of waste but it is clear that awareness must begin from the residents themselves and therefore we are supporting this type of activity and talk which help raise awareness”.
