Under the slogan “Alcala-Alcossebre pels bons tractes i la violència de gènere”, the Alcala-Alcossebre Council Department of Social Welfare and Equality has organised the programme around the commemoration on the 25th November of the International Day of elimination of Violence against Women.  The events will begin on Monday 18th November with the presentation by its author, Luisa Velasco, Police inspector and expert in domestic violence, of the “Guide for young boys and girls. What we have to know about domestic violence”.  The event, open to the public, will take place at 11/30h in the IES Serra d’Irta and will be complete with workshops for the pupils of the IES Serra d’Irta, which will deal with making them aware of the consequences of domestic violence and will teach them how to detect the first signs of mistreatment.

The 25th November is the central day of the events which will begin in the education centres with the lecture “Wings to fly high” given by Patricia Campos, in which feminine power is seen and the history of overcoming and elimination of barriers and stereotypes relating to women.  The talks will be given in the CEIPs La Mola, Lo Campanar and IES Serra d’Irta.  At 12.00 hours, the manifesto will be read out at the doors of Alcala Council and at 12.30 hours the exhibition “Dones del meu poble” will be opened in which there will be photos of Alcala-Alcossebre women accompanied by texts and phrases by relevant writers and people on domestic violence.  The exhibition can be visited in Alcala council from the 25th November to the 1st December and in the Alcossebre Municipal Offices from the 2nd to the 8th December.

The programme will end with the Women’s Self Defence Course, given by specialist Local Police officers, and starting on 16th November in Alcossebre and on 30th November in Alcala.

The councillor for Social Welfare and Equality, Marien Traver, explained that “through this programme, we hope to reach all sectors of the population, with the actions to raise the awareness of pupils and teaching boys and girls and young people how to identify domestic violence and overcome barriers and stereotypes related to women.  With public events like the exhibition of photos and reading the manifesto, we want all our residents to take part in this commemoration and the Women’s Self Defence Course, to encourage greater confidence in our women and teach them how to take advantage of their potential”.

Throughout the year, Alcala-Alcossebre Council will organise events relating to prevention of and the fight against domestic violence and attention to the victims, by taking part in the VIOGEN protocol and other coordinated actions from the Social Welfare Department and the Alcala-Alcossebre Local Police.
