The Local Alcala-Alcossebre Police are extending the Safe School Route to the CEIP La Mola

The boys and girls at the local CEIPs designed the vertical signposts which show the safe route and give them greater autonomy and encouragement to walk to school

The pupils at the CEIP La Mola in Alcossebre can now walk to school following the Safe School Route, created by the Alcala-Alcossebre Local Police.  Since the start of the term, this measure was already in use in Alcala town centre for pupils at the CEIP Lo Campanar and now it has been started in Alcossebre as well.  The initiative is trying to encourage autonomy in the boys and girls and to familiarise them with understanding the significance of the traffic signals, as well as the main concepts of road safety.  There are signs installed all along the route, both vertical and horizontal signs.  When walking along the route, the boys and girls learn to recognise the signs and understand when they must take great precautions and, finally, it teaches them to move around the town.  Another of the aims of this initiative is to encourage families to get to school by walking instead of using the car.

The pupils themselves designed the vertical signs to mark the route, through drawing competitions held in the education centres.

Education and safety councillor, Selene Blázquez, said that “we have already established that the Safe School Route is well used in Alcala and we are extending the initiative by starting to use it in Alcossebre” and she insisted that “with initiatives like this, we are bringing our boys and girls closer to concepts which they must learn and which dominate their lives day by day like road safety and respect for the environment”.

From the Local Police headquarters, Abel Serret, urged fathers and mothers “to share this initiative with their sons and daughters and, through the signs, to explain to them the importance of taking a good look at the signs and of looking out for moments of danger”.  He also thanked the person who had “had the initiative of proposing Safe School Routes”.
