The Alcala de Xivert Associació Musical Santa Cecilia celebrated their patron saint during the weekend of 23rd and 24th November with a programme of events in which the highlight was the incorporation of the seven new pupils who will form part of the band.

The celebrations started on Saturday 23rd with a procession through the local streets to collect the new musicians, who this year are Lluís Serret Giner (tenor saxophone), Júlia Serret Giner (alto saxophone), Gerard Peris Villalonga (percussion), Lara del Valle (double bass), Jaime Salvador Moreno (clarinet), Gisela Salvador Soriano (flute) and Mar Pitarch Doménech (flute).

The concert held in the Alcala de Xivert Pensioners’ Hall was another of the day’s outstanding events, during which they performed a repertoire which began with the paso doble “Vicente Marín” by José Aparicio y Rafael Doménech, the aria from la operetta “Las hijas del Zebedeo” (Carceleras) by Ruperto Chapí, in which the trumpet soloist Núria Esteller Ebrí replaced the voice of the singer with great technicality.  Another piece from an operetta, the entr’acte from “La picara molinera” by Pablo Luna; the paso doble “Lo cant del Valencià” by Pedro Sosa; The adaptation for band of “African Symphony” by Van Mcoy, with arrangements by Naohiro Iwai and the symphonic poem “Pompeia” by Hugo Chinesta.

The evening ended with a band dinner in the Restaurante El Pinar.

The following day, the Associació Musical Santa Cecilia continued with the programme of festivities starting with a procession which passed on to a mass celebrated in honour of Saint Cecilia and then the church was also the scene for the performance of chamber music and three paso dobles.  The second day’s festivities ended with a toast and a celebratory glass of wine in the Casa Abadia.
