The full Alcala-Alcossebre Council Meeting approved the municipal budget for 2020 with a total of 11,024,437 euros, with votes in favour from the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos and votes against from the Partido Socialista and Compromis.  The municipal accounts – which were approved in November and will come into force at the start of the year – include a section on investments of 764,023.  Among the most notable are the second construction phase of the Alcossebre Espai d’Oci and Casal Jove, works to improve the Alcala health centre and the recreational area of the Alcala Pensioners’ Club, adapting the municipal swimming pool changing rooms and continuing to develop new lanes and cycle lanes.  New in this budget are the purchase of school diaries for pupils in the three educational centres, a new programme of Safe Town Planning to study and remove areas in the town centres through which it is dangerous to circulate, new poster competitions to announce events organised by the Council and a new Youth Information Point.  They are also considering new aid: such as funds which are designated for the Carnival groups and the train fare discounts.

Mayor Francisco Juan explained that “although they do not appear under a headed section, this budget will take the first steps to make essential projects happen in our municipality such as the Alcala-Alcossebre boulevard; we are considering the purchase of land and drawing up the Special Plan; help to improve the old town centre; drawing up a Plan is being considered so that we will be able to enter and become part of the European and national level programmes; new pavement and lighting in the calle Las Fuentes and a project to collect rainwater in the calle Tremedal area”.

As proof of participation, this budget has included the purchase of a bench and corral for the bull celebrations at the request of the local associations, and the main requests received through the citizens’ campaign: development of a bike lane and improvements to the children’s playparks.

Treasury councillor, María Agut, explained that “with this budget we are continuing to maintain a level of indebtedness five times lower than that legally permitted, enabling us to continue taking advantage of saving and multiplying the investments, a characteristic of our management which during 2019 has meant that we are adding 913,437 euros to the investment heading, resulting in total investments of 1,840,737 euros.

The Socialist Party presented an amendment to reduce investments and expenses by a total of 78,300 euros and designating it to other matters.  The Popular Party voted against it and its inclusion in the agenda ended up being rejected.

On the other hand, the meeting unanimously gave the green light to provisional approval of the Sustainable Town Planning Movement Plan (PMUS) rejecting the only complaint presented during the public exhibition.
