The Santa Lucía Ethnological Interpretation Centre in Alcossebre, has opened its doors with an event which was well attended by local bodies and groups.
Situated next to the Santa Lucía hermitage, it is the first interpretation and visitors’ reception centre situated practically at the foot of the archaeological site. Precisely, in this new cultural space exhibits the re-creations of the principal archaeological remains found during the successive campaigns carried out by the Castellón Provincial Diputación Archaeological Service and the Alcala-Alcossebre Council at the Santa Lucia site, such as pieces of ceramic dating from different epochs and gold and silver articles. They have also made models which reconstruct how the workshops and houses of the 7th century BC were located and the settlement and castle during the Islamic epoch, in the eleventh to twelfth centuries. The visitors’ reception centre is complete with an area for projecting and audio-visual film which explains the historical and strategical importance of Santa Lucía throughout history.
Mayor Francisco Juan emphasised that “in our municipality, we have extensive heritage but we have not stopped at just looking at it but have supported its preservation, giving it value and, as in this case, spreading information so that it serves to attract visitors and shows our history”. Juan thanked “everyone who has participated in the different archaeological campaigns which were carried out over the years and all those who carried out investigations about Santa Lucía, which has enabled us to learn how our ancestors lived and now exhibit it and explain it”.
Alcala-Alcossebre Council took charge of the construction of the new cultural space which cost 122,675 euros and has received 50,692 euros from the Valencian Community FEDER operational programme and 12,673 euros from the Provincial Diputación.
The Centre can be visited during weekends, holidays, Easter Week and during the summer.
