120 volunteers collect 1000 kilos of debris left on Alcossebre’s beaches by the storm

The response to the call from Alcala-Alcossebre Council exceeded expectations and the collection was extended to the Cargador, Romana, Moro, Tres Playas and Mañetes beaches

[Img #77186]120 people took part on Saturday morning in the voluntary collection organised by the Alcala-Alcossebre Council to remove the debris washed up by storm Gloria on to the Alcossebre beaches.  The response of such a large number of people taking part exceeded expectations and this meant that by organising them in groups, it was possible to cover the Cargador, Romana, Moro, Tres Playas and Mañetes beaches, removing 1000 kilos of debris, most of it plastics and cork.  The Council provided gloves and plastic bags for the participants and, once the collection was over, the company with the concession for the cleaning and collection of debris, took it away to be treated appropriately.

The Environment councillor, Juan Carlos Barceló, emphasised “the great reception the initiative had received” and thanked “everyone who dedicated Saturday morning to accompany us in removing the debris”  Barceló explained that “the contracted company and the Council, are continuing to carry out the cleaning and removal of rubbish so that the municipality can continue recovering normality after the storm but, in the case of very small particles which were caught between rocks and the sand of our beaches, it was essential to have everyone’s cooperation”.

The next volunteers’ collection will be on Friday, 7th February, will be managed by pupils from the Serra d’Irta Secondary School and will be based on the Las Fuentes beach.
