Last night, Friday, the big procession took place welcoming the Carnival queen; the council balcony was the scene in which Clara Cerdán, from the “De tot un poc” (A little of everything) group, received the keys to the town, and then greeted and cheered on all the groups participating in the first of the Carnival processions.
Hundreds of people took part in the street procession, which passed through the town’s main streets. Although it is traditionally a night for “informal fancy dress”, the groups radiated colour and ingenuity in their outfits for the occasion.
The starter gun for the Carnival programme was fired for the first street processions during the day by pupils from the Lo Campanar Primary school pupils together with those in the respite unit and then in the afternoon the youngest from the infant school and the play centre set off through the streets to show off their costumes.
Today, Saturday, the programme continues with the afternoon procession for youngsters with their king, Luis Herraíz. He will be 8 in March and enjoys Carnival every year with the greatest anticipation, and both he and his group, “Els Tremendos”, received the news of his naming as Child King with much happiness and emotion. The procession ends with a cup of chocolate for all those present.
The big procession takes place on Saturday night, starting from the Avenida Marruecos, passing through the town’s main streets until they reach the sambodromo in the Juan Vilanova square.
The town’s Carnival celebrations continue until Sunday, 23rd February and will take place in Alcossebre the following weekend, on the 28th and 29th February and 1st March.
