Alcala-Alcossebre Council Safety Department has started a campaign for “Smoke-Free zones”, aiming to remind citizens that smoking in public places is prohibited, particularly in sensitive places such as the immediate vicinity of educational and medical centres and children’s play areas, applying current legislation. Therefore they are installing a total of 18 signs stating the Generalitat Valenciana’s Law 10/2014 concerning the prohibition legislature, with pictograms and texts. The signs contain the words in Spanish, Valencian and English.
Safety Councillor, Selene Blázquez, explained that “the idea came from an officer in the Local Police in charge of the Youth Unit and we thought it would be very interesting to give a reminder about the prohibition and that by using messages and pictograms, no-one, including people from other countries which do not have the same legislation, could claim not to know about it”.
From the Police Headquarters, Abel Serret said “the Local Police Youth Unit gives talks in the IES Serra d’Irta to make adolescents aware of the negative consequences of nicotine poisoning from starting to smoke and to warn them of addiction” and he urges them that “knowing the areas in which tobacco is prohibited can also help to decrease its consumption”
