Alcala-Alcossebre Council approves modifying the regulation prohibiting the purchase of ‘blanket-top’ products
At a Council meeting on 28th May, Alcala-Alcossebre Council approved modifying the byelaw for regulating citizens being together to put a brake on antisocial conduct related to the purchase of products sold by illegal street sellers, better known as ‘blanket top’ sales. The modification consisted of introducing a paragraph in which alluded specifically to “the purchase or acquisition in a public space of any product is prohibited if it is from an unauthorised sedentary or travelling vendor”. In this way, it will be possible to pursue and sanction those who acquire these products. This modification was demanded by local shopkeepers and the Alcala-Alcossebre Business Association and adds a new tool which would warn and sanction possible purchasers about acquiring illegal products. “The blanket-top sales greatly harm local establishments which pay their taxes and comply with all the legalities and therefore we adopted this measure to have more tools to put a stop to this illegal practice”, Mayor Francisco Juan explained.
The Council plans to announce this information so that residents and visitors are made aware that, should they not comply with the byelaw, they will be committing an offense. It would then be possible to apply the sanctions planned in the byelaw which go from 750 euros, in the case of a minor offence, to 3,000 euros in the event of very serious offences.
On the other hand, they have also modified the byelaw to include a paragraph which makes drying clothes on balconies in a way which is visible from the street prohibited. Town Planning Councillor, Miguel Martorell, emphasised that “it is a matter of a good image and hygiene in our town nuclei and we are trying to prevent clothing being hung visibly on balconies”. Decorations which are displayed on balconies as a result of people’s parties and local fiestas in the town are excluded.
These modifications were approved with votes in favour from all the municipal groups except Compromis.
