On 16th June, Alcala-Alcossebre Council spoke about the delays to the works repairing Alcossebre’s beaches, to be undertaken by the Valencian Generalitat and central Government, through the Costas Provincial Service. In spite of storm Gloria, which caused major damage all along the Alcossebre shore at the end of January, the repair works did not start until the end of May and, in fact, are still currently continuing.
“The Council took immediate action after the storm in everything which was our responsibility, such as organising the accesses and the removal of materials but, both Costas and the Generalitat Valenciana, delayed excessively the start of the works which have also been slowed down by the health crisis and, now, the repairs are continuing when they should already have been finished”, Mayor Francisco Juan explained and he urged that “just like our citizens, the Council also is asking how it is possible that the beaches are not yet completed and it is necessary to have an explanation of why it has not happened”.
Currently, the wooden walkways are still being repaired along the Romana beach as well as the fences on the Cargador beach and the sand is still be levelled on the Las Fuentes beach. Still pending is the installation of showers by the Generalitat Valenciana. “In the Council, we have worked against the clock so that the beaches were able to have all the safety and hygiene measures which COVID-19 demands and swimming could start this week with the protocol ready but we would have liked to be able to count on all the infrastructures being repaired and services being in place by now and, unfortunately, this is not going to be possible, due to the accumulation of delays by Costas and the Generalitat Valenciana”.
