From the 1st July, the Alcala-Alcossebre Council Culture Department is resuming its guided visits to the Xivert castle and the Santa Lucía chapel, both of them are Buildings of SPECIAL Cultural Interest.  Adapting to the COVID-19 recommendations, the groups will be smaller, of no more than 20 people, in order to maintain safe distancing.  The visits are free and it is not necessary to register in advance.  To participate, you just have to arrive at the appointed meeting point (the castle car park and the entrance to the Santa Lucía chapel).

The visits have been held for eight years and have seen increased interest, reflected in the number of visitors during this time.  María Agut, head of Culture, stated that “we continue to be focussed on our objective of attracting visitors to our important heritage sites here which results in a flow of visitors to the centre of Alcala and the castle and other tourist activities such as the “Inheritance of the Templars” route”.

Visits to the castle will be every Wednesday and Friday, starting at 08.45 hours, from the car park which can be reached in a vehicle from the centre of Alcala de Xivert.  During the visit, the different archaeological finds from the castle will be described and the tour will cover the various parts of the enclave related to the different Iberian, Muslim and Templar historic periods, which still preserve remains.  The visit ends at the Gaspatxera Archaeology Museum Collection in the CESAL in Alcala, to understand the importance of the remains discovered following the different excavation campaigns carried out under the supervision of the Provincial Diputación Archaeological Service.

The visits to the Santa Lucía chapel will be made on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 09.00h to 13.00h.  The visit includes learning about the remains from the Iberian period, the visit to the baroque chapel and the Ethnological Information Centre where there is an exhibition of models and videos of the historic and archaeological wealth of the period.
