Alcala-Alcossebre Council is asking for the trains cancelled on the Castellón line to be reinstated

Alcala-Alcossebre Council has approved an institutional declaration in which the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Town Planning is asked to re-instate 100% of the frequencies on the Medium Distance lines between Vinaròs and Castellón. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Spain has withdrawn 8 of the 12 services which unite Castellón with the Baix Maestrat region, which means “it is a very clear backward step” and leaves many local men and women residents with no other options for getting to Castellón or to other municipalities for work, study or medical and administrative appointments. The text of the declaration recalls that “after many years of demands from the municipalities and from the region’s citizens for increased action, to finally achieve that the Baix Maestrat was well connected by train with Castellón, relying on sufficient frequencies to ensure its usefulness and take advantage of the line”.
The municipal corporation is asking central Government to provide sufficient budget amounts to reinstate the investments in public transport and to carry out a general reduction in the prices of the current transport means – that the 10 journey ticket should last a year and not a month and that different prices should be offered for tickets for students and workers. Also, it asks for a hub for Castellón Regional trains to be created, making it possible for the regional trains to arrive in Alcala de Xivert.
The Institutional Declaration also alludes to the withdrawal of the AVE line between Castellón and Madrid which “means a serious problem for the province’s tourism sector and, in particular, for our municipality as we are going through a time in which national tourists are essential for the sector to recuperate” which is why the Ministry is being asked to “reactivate it immediately”.
Among the actions to improve public transport, the Council promises to increase the frequency of buses between Alcalà-Las Fuentes-Alcossebre-Capicorb to meet the demands of those who use this means of transport to get to work.
