Alcala-Alcossebre has won a prize for the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

[Img #79710]In the category in the Valencian Community for municipalities of less than 20,000 inhabitants, Alcala-Alcossebre Council has received the 2nd prize in the 2020, 5th year, of the European Mobility Week Prizes, for drawing up and approving the town’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan – PMUS.  The prizegiving event was held on 17th September as part of the Valencian Sustainable Mobility Day, via videoconference.

The jury evaluated the plan as “well-constructed with ambitious measures such as doubling the safe pedestrian ways, creating a network of cycle tracks, freeing the centre of Alcossebre of traffic and improving public transport”.

Mayor Francisco Juan, who participated in the day, pointed out that “Alcala de Xivert is a municipality with two urban nuclei, Alcala and Alcossebre, and this has its difficulties for us but also it gives us tasks and, exactly, we decided upon drawing up the PMUS as an opportunity to manage key questions such as road regulation, cycle-pedestrian areas and the communication between the two nuclei” and he reminded that “we have already carried out some measures which were proposed in this plan and others will be carried out shortly”.

Drawing up the Alcala-Alcossebre PMUS began in 2018, with the Council in charge and assistance from the Feder Funds, and consisted of making an inventory and analysing the town’s whole road network, carrying out mobility surveys and measuring the traffic numbers, analysing aspects such as public transport, bicycle and pedestrian mobility, analysing the car parks’ capacity, working out an accessibility plan, and diagnosing the atmospheric contamination and acoustics and energy consumption.  Citizens’ participation played an important role in the preparation, with street surveys, meetings with working groups in which different sectors of the population were represented, as well as participation via online tools.  Following drawing it up, the PMUS was approved and came into force in January 2020.
