Alcala-Alcossebre Food Bank has doubled the number of families it serves during this year 2020, coinciding with the financial crisis caused by the health situation.  At the beginning of the year, the number was 65 whilst now there are 135 families (297 people) who receive the distribution of products and, at some times in the year, this reached 180 families.  This municipal resource is managed by the Azahar Resources Association and a team of volunteers takes charge daily of collecting the foods donated by local supermarkets and distributing them to the beneficiaries of the Food Bank during their established distribution opening hours and days.  The increase in families served motivated the Council to request the inclusion in the 2020 European Programme for Assistance Fund for the Most Disadvantaged People (FEAD) which meant receiving over 2,000 kilos of basic foodstuffs.

Social Welfare councillor, Melina Fradejas, emphasised that “this resource has become a very important means of help for local families which are going through a complicated financial situation”.

With the aim of increasing the funds and diversifying the products available during the Christmas period, a charity campaign has been started to collect foods.  People who wish to cooperate can take their products to the Alcala Food Bank (in calle Villanueva) on Tuesdays and Fridays from 09.30h to 10.30h and to the Alcossebre premises in Calle Alcala on the corner with Avenida Valencia on Wednesdays from 09.30h to 10.30h.
