The Templars and the Xivert Castle
There is
currently a graphics exhibition in the CESAL in Alcala showing the previously
unknown history of the fortified Xivert Castle, one of the most important in
the province, and its connections with the Templars. Many of the historical secrets were explained
last month in a talk given by journalist, writer and editor, Ángel Almazán de
Gracia, entitled “The Esoteric Culture of the Templars in Xivert”. He spoke of aspects relating to the years
during which the castle was under the government of this military order.
Almazan’s
passion for and knowledge of the Templars has led him to become the coordinator
for the Soriayams en la Red blog group and he has written some twenty books on
the subject. His help and assessment has
also been sought in several national and foreign televised documentaries about
the Order of the Temple.
The Xivert
settlement possesses hundreds of different sorts of historical facts, from its
construction at the end of the 10th century at the time of the
caliph. The castle and the Moorish
population in Xivert became subject to the Order of the Temple through a
peaceful surrender agreement dated 1234.
The Templars worked on the fort, changing it to meet their requirements,
both from military and religious points of view. At the same time, the Templars converted
Xivert into a Command which included the new Christian settlements in Alcala,
Alcossebre, Almedixer and Castellnou, as well as the Xivert Moorish quarters.
This situation
continued until the dissolution of the Military Order of the Temple, and was
then inherited by the Order of Santa María de Montesa, which continued to
govern it.
