Alcossebre Singers

The energetic Alcossebre Singers´ brilliant and entertaining concert at St. Christopher church of Alcossebre

They are really energetic, those British Alcossebre Singers, singing Christmas carols „all over“ Alcossebre, Alcalá and Torreblanca, indoors and outdoors.
However, the highlight, I think, has been the concert given on Friday, December 9th, at Alcossebre´s St. Christopher Church, not only because of the good accoustics.
The church was packed by British, Germans and Spanish, Mayor Francisco Juan and councillor Ricardo Aguilar included.
The choir, who normally sport funny Santa hats when singing outdoors, were smartly turned out in long red scarves  and black and white outfits.
A really extensive programme, with mostly funny but also some sentimental carols. There were even two premieres – maybe world premieres? -: A Frère Jacques version „Where is Santa? Here I am“ and The Twelve Days of Christmas, sung in Spanish, according to a pasodoble, a bright and witty idea of Vivienne Webb, the conductor´s wife, the keyboard player and accompanist.
Some carols were only sung by the choir, but most carols were supposed to be sung by the audience, too. No chance of escaping as the conductor made everyone stand up whenever they had to sing. No possibility of resisting a former teacher´s orders! So everybody was singing, a really nice international choir, within a great atmosphere.
Most carols were sung in English, but there were also quite a lot of Spanish carols, even mixed ones, a good exercise and language test for British and Spanish as we were told by the Alcossebre Players director and member of the choir, Eddie McKay, who made some witty introductions in English and Spanish to the different parts of the programme; at the end she also advised people that the entrance was free but not the exit, once more no chance of escaping as two tall men were watching over the door.
Everybody agreed that it had been a wonderful, uplifting evening, a merry introduction to a hopefully merry Christmas, too.
Lots of thanks to the choir, the conductor, the accompanist and her page turner Ken for the nice hours spent in their company, for the hard work they have done throughout pre Christmas season as well as for their great charity fund raising.
Wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a good, healthy New Year where, I am sure, you will give us, once more, a twinkling, heart warming concert.
