Exchanges based on local gastronomy
On 29th November, Alcala de Xivert was host for a gastronomic exchange between the town’s Asociación de Amas de Casa and the Asociación de la Mujer in Benicarlo, with over 200 women taking part. The event, which was attended by the mayor Francisco Juan and councillors Pascual Herrera, Desa Pitarch and María Agut, was very relaxed and all those taking part had a great time around the culinary ‘treasures’ which the Alcala Amas de Casa had prepared.
The day started with an exhibition, by the Alcala amas de casa, of some of the typical dishes using the ‘hanging tomato’ as the main ingredient. Tomato quiche, tomato tart and tomatoes with all sorts of fillings were some of the recipes on display for the ladies from Benicarlo. In addition, as the Asociación de Amas de Casa has just edited a book of desert recipes based on citrus fruit, all those present were given orange sorbets and various liqueurs, made from Alcalà oranges.
But the day was also an opportunity for the Alcala ladies to show how good they are at making their traditional pastries and cakes, as every member had brought something which over the years has appeared in the different recipe books edited by the group.
There were also ‘hanging tomatoes’ available to purchase, provided as a promotion by the Asociación de Comercializadores y Productores, as well as home-made orange marmalade.
Positive Values
Neither Francisco Juan, nor the councillors who attended the event with him, let the event pass without thanking the ladies from Benicarlo for coming to Alcala and highlighted the hospitality shown by the Alcala ladies.
The visit was completed with a tour of the St. John the Baptist church and the parish museum, which, together with the Bell Tower, are iconic emblems of the town. This collaboration received the support of the Alcala Council.
Now a date has to be arranged for the Alcala ladies to visit those in Benicarlo who will demonstrate the many qualities of their star product, the artichoke.
