12-years old Joan Cortés Martorell was declared champion in the First Alcala-Alcossebre Chess Campus, which took place on 7th January.  His sister, Andrea Cortés, was placed second, with a special mention by the organisation for Cristina Mundo Soler, 10 years old, who played a great tournament.
But for the Alcala Chess Club, it was the participation of five year old young chess player, Andrés Fernández Sospedra, which was important when he won 2.5 points out of the possible four in his first tournament.  Those present at the tournament were astounded by the chess being played by this precocious local chess player.
Members of the organisation said that they had “today found a star in Alcala de Xivert, they had seen a new Fischer in the chess world.  If Andres were Russian, he would already be in a school for the specially gifted, playing chess and studying with a fully paid scholarship.  Following this projection, in a few years in any gathering in the country, if you are talking about chess, you will name Alcala de Xivert and you will have to mention Andrés Fernández Sospedra as a virtuoso of the game.  The Alcala de Xivert Chess Club, together with the local Council, is proud to be able to offer all means in their reach and to ensure that he will have training classes, official competitions and, very importantly, that they do not to spoil him”.  He is a young boy who is “sharp, crafty, very sensible for his age and methodical”.
Classes for new pupils in the club start on 23rd January thanks to the support authorised by the Alcala de Xivert Council.  This was great news which was passed on by those running the club to its members at the traditional end of season prize-giving dinner.  The chess club is open for children who wish to start learning the game and carries out various activities - Lectures, analysis of games, demonstrations and tournaments are some of the events.  Around 50 children in Alcala and Alcossebre will thus be able to develop their knowledge of the chess discipline.  At present, 4 of them are already part of the team which will defend the local club’s colours in the Interclubs Championship which will be held between Vinaros, Benicarlo and Alcala from the 21st January.
The Club recently visited the giant chess board in the garden of Ramon Foix’s house, in the Paseo Héroes de Marruecos in Alcala.  Very kindly, Ramón’s family allowed the club to visit and take some photos.  The chess pieces are unusual.  They are made by Staunton but are about 50 cms. tall.  They are unique.  They are perfect, very well preserved and show the love that the builder must have had for this noble discipline”.
The Council Sports Department wants to promote all kinds of activities in the municipality and this has led to close cooperation with the local chess club.
