The Tast del Territori demonstrated the properties of the Alcala de Xivert “Tomata de penjar”
On Friday, 6th
September, Vinaros Market held a new Tast del Territori dedicated to the Alcala
de Xivert ‘Hanging Tomato’, which has the Valencian Community Quality
Seal. This variety of tomato is
characterised by its organoleptic qualities which give it a particularly
intense flavour, sweet and not very acidic, thanks to ripening in the
Mediterranean climate. The most
recommended and popular way of eating it is raw, to prepare bread with tomato,
seasoned with salt and oil – this is how people can try it at the Tast – but it
is also wonderful cut in half, for salad, or grilled to accompany meat, fish or
vegetables.
The Alcala de
Xivert hanging tomato is marketed all year round, depending on the level of
production, as members of the Association of Producers and Marketers
explained. Currently, they are working to
obtain the ‘Denominación de Origen’ mark, protecting the artisanal production
and regarding the traditional varieties, as part of the cultural heritage of
the Baix Maestrat and Alcala de Xivert.
Alcala will be holding the First Hanging Tomato Fair from the 25th
to 27th October as part of this promotion.
The next Vinaros
Market Tast del Territori will be held on 20th September and will be
based on Albocasser’s almonds. This
initiative, organised by the company Mira Què Bo! and promoted by the Vinaros Council
Departments of Tourism and Business, aims to increase consumption of local
products and to contribute to the Vinaros Market becoming a meeting and
business place.
