Percumascleta

The “Percumascleta” is a true fiesta!

El Repiquet gathered about 400 drummers from all around the province in Alcala de Xivert and presented Alex Mirasol’s painting on the biggest drum in the world to everyone.

[Img #4932]For the second year, the Percumascleta proved to be a great success with participants and the crowds watching and listenings.  There were hundreds of bass drums and drums belonging to the main brotherhoods and associations in the province who were keen to take part in the event in Alcala.
The time set for the start of the event was 10pm and with British punctuality, the procession started off along the town’s main streets.  To the rhythm of the provincial drumming, the procession arrived in the church square, which was already crowded with people.
Then the Percumascleta started.  First, the biggest drum in the world, Lo Gaspatxer, sounded with mayor Francisco Juan grasping the drumstick, then hundreds of drums beat out in unison, with the bells pealing, and the sky alive with colour and explosions from the fireworks.  The noise was tremendous, but this was the objective of all those present and the crowd wildly applauded the spectacle
Francisco Juan, who together with the local parish priest Mossen Carlos, led the event, thanked all those present for coming to the town to take part in a ‘simply spectacular’ event.  He also congratulated El Repiquet on their organisation of the Percumascleta and for presenting Alex Mirasol’s painting on Lo Gaspatxer, the biggest drum in the world.  “Your drum, Lo Gaspatxer, is an extraordinary work and now its painting is magnificent and faithfully reflects the most iconic parts of our municipality.  This is all the result of the phenomenal amount of work which El Repiquet has carried out and which has made them an exemplary group”, the mayor emphasised.
Francisco Juan and Mossen Carlos also took part with Maria Agut, the Culture Councillor, in presenting the awards to the brotherhoods and associations who had attended this second year of the Percumascleta in Alcala de Xivert from all over the province.
The night ended with hot chocolate, and the traditional biscuits, which delighted the musicians and the crowd.
El Repiquet will next be drumming on Good Friday night.
