Torreblanca 2012 Passion Play
Singer David Civera will be the Patron for the Torreblanca Passion Play
The poster for the Passion Play this year has been produced by the painter Alicia Mulet, from Torreblanca, the Plastic Arts teacher at the Torreblanca Secondary School.
The choice of poster promoting the Torreblanca 2012 Passion Play was announced on 3rd March in the Torreblanca Council Meeting Room.
The event was presided over by the mayor of Torreblanca, Juan Manuel Peraire, Culture Councillor, Inma Segura, Abel Segura who is the actor who will be playing Jesus Christ in the Passion Play and by singer David Civera who will be the patron of this theatrical representation of the last days of Jesus Christ, held every Maundy Thursday in the streets of Torreblanca. David Civera, from Teruel, was a great attraction, and drew many residents to the Council Meeting Room for the presentation, where he happily signed autographs and posed for photos with the Fiesta Queens and people around him. He will act as an ambassador for the Passion Play. The principal actors in the Passion Play were also present.
Alicia Mulet’s poster was on display, showing one of the Nazarene’s hands with his wrist nailed to the cross with a background of shadows.
There are a great number of people who when they think of Holy Week in the Valencian Community think of the name of the town in the north of Castellón: Torreblanca. And it is certain that they have heard of the Passion Play and how all the people of Torreblanca wish to become actors on Maundy Thursday and to transform the town into Jerusalem.
The open-air theatre, the Roman market in the old streets of the town and the final scenes at the Calvary chapel make the Passion Play a cultural and tourist special event for Easter in Castellón Province.
The fact that the theatrical work is performed in Valencian is not a problem for visitors who do not know our language as they can clearly understand it all, as the story is extremely well-known. In fact, it is the unique factor of it being performed in Valencian which distinguishes it from all the others, as the Torreblanca Passion Play was the first in the whole of the Valencian Community to be performed in Valencian.
The Torreblanca Passion Play has been produced for more than thirty years, with the direct or indirect participation of over 300 Torreblancans. There are over 100 actors, all of them residents of the town, and some 200 people freely cooperating in creating scenery, costumes, lighting, etc.
The Torreblanca Passion Play also represents a tradition which has passed from generation to generation. For example, the sons, cousins and nephews of those who play the apostles take on the roles of their relatives as they get older and retire from the stage. In the Passion Play there is also an order in casting the main parts as the years pass. Residents become actors for a day, after rehearsing at night for many months, for a Passion Play which is in their genes and in their cultural roots.
In recent years, the Torreblanca Council Culture Department has added a Roman Market which will be open throughout Easter, to provide an additional attraction for visitors to Torreblanca who are there to enjoy the Passion Play. The actors will process through the streets with the Roman Market so that on Maundy Thursday the town really seems to have changed itself into Jerusalem.
