WORLD WOMEN’S DAY
How women progressed in society in Alcala de Xivert, seen in pictures
International Women’s Day was celebrated in Alcala and Alcossebre during the events planned for “Women’s Week” which started on Tuesday, 6th March.
The main event of the day was the presentation of a video with pictures of the history and evolution of women in Alcala de Xivert-Alcossebre. The video was shown in the morning in Alcala and in the afternoon in Alcossebre.
Both performances were well attended. Psychologists from Family Services, a service provided by the Council for more than a decade for residents in the town, were present to introduce the video and discuss it afterwards.
Francisco Juan, the Alcala mayor, spoke about how valued the women’s role is in society. “They have achieved and are achieving more advances so that these difficult economic times we are living in are not an obstacle. Day by day women play a fundamental role in our society and must be taken into consideration when maintaining and promoting equality which should never be considered an imposition but a right”. And for Juan “the equality of which we speak between men and women should not be news nor a matter for debate, it is more. I sincerely believe that equality is making progress in all its aspects with the premise of normality”. The Social Services and Cultural Councillors, Desa Pitarch and Maria Agut, attended the showing. Communications councillor, Pascual Herrera, also took part in the viewings.
This was just one of the events in the week’s programme of workshops and classes covering a wide variety of subjects from make-up to cooking. All were popular and well attended.
