The Council and the Diputación are working together to promote Alcala’s ‘hanging tomato’
By joining forces, the Alcala de Xivert-Alcossebre Council and the Provincial Diputación aim to promote the well-known Alcala ‘hanging tomato’, which achieved the Valencian Community quality mark in 2008. The Diputación Agriculture Deputy, Pablo Roig, met with local councillors and members of the Associació de la Tomata de Penjar in Alcala de Xivert to draw up a programme of cooperation to continue working to spread knowledge of this quality product.
In the short term, a European project is to be set up regarding the benefits of eating tomatoes. The Jaume I University is taking part in this project. The Provincial Diputación will also cooperate in organising the Hanging Tomato Fair to be held in mid-October. The hanging tomato is part of the Castellón Flavour Route with which the Provincial Diputacion promotes the most outstanding of the province’s gastronomic products.
The Mayor, Francisco Juan, pointed out that “the hanging tomato is part of our culture and we will keep on working to promote it and make it better known. Fundamental to this is that we can count on the Diputación so that, through its campaigns and initiatives, our best known agricultural product is included”.
