Alcala-Alcossebre Council asks Costas for authority to improve accessibility and paving of the foot path along the Romana beach

[Img #54444]The mayor of Alcala-Alcossebre, Francisco Juan, and the Town-planning councillor José Colom, went to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Environment to explain the necessity of taking action for paving and improving the accessibility along the pedestrian path in the Cami L’Atall which runs from next to the Romana beach in Alcossebre, between the Cargador beach and the Moro beach.

The path, which was originally installed by the Costas Provincial Service, suffered serious damage to the surface, making it difficult for walkers to pass along it, in particular those with reduced mobility.  It is an area of coastal public control; the Council cannot carry out any repair work if it does not have the Ministry’s authorisation.  It is a matter of approximately 1,500 sq. metres, along a path with approximate dimensions of 650 metres in length and 2.5 metres wide.

In the meetings they had with the general director for Coastal Sustainability, Raquel Orts, the vice-director general for Coastal Protection, Ángel Suárez, and the vice-director for Public Control, Josefa Solernou, the council representatives pressed the point that “we urgently need to carry out the work to resurface the path to leave it in a good condition, similar to that which Costas has already carried out along the Moro beach, where they have surfaced it and put up signs, much improving circulation in the area”.

The Costas representatives picked up the request and indicated that technicians from the Costas Provincial Service and the Alcala-Alcossebre Council should start to work together on drawing up the project to undertake the work.  On behalf of the Council, the Mayor said that “we believe the work to be so important that we are willing to collaborate and look for the necessary ways so that it can become a reality in the shortest time possible.  Our coast is one of our principal attractions and it is essential to improve this section”.

There were also discussions during the meeting about urgent work which Costas are already carrying out to alleviate the serious effect on the Alcossebre beaches caused by the storm.  Just a few days after the storm, repairs had already started to the damaged wooden structures, as well as to the affected coast line.  It is hoped that the beaches will be back to normal before Easter week.
