Alcossebre’s Las Fuentes beach reopens for bathing
The Dirección General del Agua has decreed that the beach can reopen following the latest analysis of the water complying with the required quality parameters
The Las Fuentes beach in Alcossebre has reopened to bathers. This was notified to the Council on 29th July by the Dirección General del Agua authorising the re-opening. The Dirección General’s communication specified that during the week new analyses were carried out and the situation monitored and in the last samples taken there were no indications of the presence of contamination by Escherichia Coli or Enterococcus. In the analysis obtained on the 18th and 19th July, the values of Escherichia Coli indicated were greater than the limits required for water to be suitable for bathing, while during the week to 29th July the values reduced enough for the water quality to be classified as “Excellent”.
The south end of the beach where the springs are situated and where the contaminated water appeared, will continue to be fenced in as the Council will continue working on drainage to allow the fresh waters to be re-routed and channelled to an area away from the beach where they will be discharged after being purified. The Council and FACSA have been working continuously since the moment the order was issued to close the beach to bathing while the provenance of the spillage which had caused the water contamination was checked. After inspecting the municipal sewage network and the operation of the pipes, it was found that there is a small leak, which is difficult to locate and which could be due to works or a break in the connections to private buildings from the general network, so that an exhaustive inspection covering more and more of the area where the problem is situated is being carried out.
The Mayor Francisco Juan explained that “we are doing everything in our power to find a solution to this problem which is harming everyone: residents, visitors and local tourist businesses. Once the beach is open, we shall continue taking the measures necessary to resolve the situation and to ensure that it is not repeated”.
