Sales of tomatoes reached 3,500 kilos during the Alcala de Xivert 5th ‘Hanging Tomato’ Fair

The sales of the product and the attendance exceeded that of previous years

The Alcala de Xivert ‘Hanging Tomato’ Fair, organised by the local Council, ended with the best figures for attendance and the sale of tomatoes of the last five years.  Proof of the massive number who attended was that the Council had to double the number of free buses between Alcala and Alcossebre.

Regarding the sales, the stalls on which ‘hanging tomatoes’ could be bought, a product with the certification of the Valencian Community Quality Mark, have reckoned that a total of 3,500 kilos were sold during the two days of the fair.

Culture councillor, María Agut, explained that “each year, the number attending has increased as well as the sales of tomatoes which is one of our main objectives.  When organising the fair we want: to make our tomatoes better known, promote them and facilitate the direct sale, thus increasing the marketing as people get to know them”.

The Mayor, Francisco Juan, stated that “a great deal of merit is due to the local growers who are members of the Hanging Tomatoes Productors Association as they are the ones who make this unique product possible, through its cultivation and completely natural handling”.

Attendance at the fair was massive, both the 60 stalls set up in the historic centre and the gastronomic demonstrations, tastings and show-cooking dedicated to the properties and uses of the hanging tomato in the kitchen, which were held in the Gastronomic Space in the Church Square”.

For all this, the council leader thanked them “for the work and collaboration of all the professionals who took part in the different events and who contributed to add value to our fair”.

The fair was complete with visits to the local bell tower and church which were also of interest to those attending the fair.  Local restaurants will continue offering menus themed with the ‘hanging tomato’ during the next few weeks.
