Sant Antoni fiesta celebrations in Alcossebre

This weekend Alcossebre celebrated its Saint Anthony fiestas with the construction and burning of the bonfire on Saturday and the celebration of blessing the animals on Sunday.  A group of residents of the coastal nucleus, as there were no ‘mayorales’ this year, offered to organise the fiestas and to carry out the necessary tasks.

The work started on Saturday 27th when volunteers met up to collect the wood and branches to build the bonfire, which was then followed by the gathering of the Pi dels Fadrins, carried on the shoulders of the volunteers – although they were under strain with the work.  With music from the ‘xaranga’, as if it was something in holy week, the curious procession arrived with the tree trunk which formed the base of the structure around which the branches and ‘argilagues’ were heaped up.

After breakfast they started to build the bonfire, which was followed by the preparation of the paellas to get their energy back for the evening.  There were traditional games and horse rides for children and music to accompany the fiesta.

Events ended with setting fire to the bonfire.  The fiestas continued on Sunday with the blessing of the animals.
