Alcala de Xivert and Peñíscola ask the Generalitat Valenciana not to exclude them from the Via Litoral Project

On 21sst March, the mayors of Alcala de Xivert, Francisco Juan, and Peñíscola, Andrés Martínez, held a meeting in Alcala Council to discuss their concern because the Shore Route (Via Litoral) project of the Generalitat Valenciana which plans the construction of a sustainable cycle/pedestrian path from the north to the south of the Comunitat, excludes their municipalities from the initial development.  The Generalitat Valenciana has already announced, as pilot projects, the sections from Vinaros-Benicarló and Torreblanca-Prat de Cabanes, but without developing the intermediate section in the municipal towns of Alcala de Xivert and Peñíscola.

“There is no sense in building a cycle/pedestrian route and not making it continuous, leaving Alcala and Peñíscola in a black hole.  We request the Generalitat Valenciana to think again and to make this good as our residents and visitors have every right to depend on this Shore Route section and that it should be a continuation of the route which has already been planned”, Francisco Juan said.  The mayor of Peñíscola reminded people that “in our municipalities, we have an extraordinary environmental space, the Sierra d’Irta, on which it is essential to have a sustainable infrastructure such as this”.

Alcala de Xivert Council has asked the Dirección General del Territorio in writing for the initial development of the Via Litoral to include Alcala de Xivert, but has received no response.  The mayor of Alcala-Alcossebre has insisted that “during the last three years, with regard to environmental matters and land management, the Generalitat Valenciana has only concentrated on destruction” and he remembered that “we are still awaiting the outcome of the PATIVEL development, which restricts sustainable tourist development in our municipality”.  Juan reminded people that “over 500 complaints had been presented and the Council had put forward an alternative proposal to this plan but that this was not set in motion either, so that we continue in a legal vacuum which prevents new tourist infrastructures being implemented, with the financial harm this means for our municipality”.
