The former Vila-real and Spain player, Marcos Senna, and the director of the Vila-real football centre, Raúl Herrera, gave an entertaining talk on 17th March in the Alcala de Xivert Espai d’Oci as part of the programme the Sports department is developing during 2018.
There was a large audience, made up principally of C F Alcala footballers of all ages, who were very interested in the event and to hear about the details and anecdotes of this charismatic footballer’s life, as well as the work being done by Alcala-resident Raúl Herrera in the football centre.
On his arrival at the Espai d’Oci, Marcos Senna was friendly and accessible, being photographed with the young players and giving autographs and smiles.
The Alcala-Alcossebre Sports councillor, Desa Pitarch, introduced the speakers to the meeting, and then passed on to the mayor, Francisco Juan Mars, who welcomed them, pointing out the importance to the province of having a sports institution like Vila-real, “we are lucky to have a team like Vila-real, one of the best in Spain, which is always willing to cooperate with all the towns in the province”. The mayor went on to say how proud Alcala-Alcossebre is to have a resident directing the football centre of such a prestigious sporting body, also thanking such an important and charismatic player as Marcos Senna, for coming to share his experiences in the world of elite football with the young local players.
In his speech to the audience, Raúl Herrera shared the pride he felt at seeing so many young footballers gathered together wearing the Alcala badge and urged them to continue making the effort to work and dedicate themselves to the sport they love. He explained that football provides a great opportunity for training, both from the point of view of the game itself and for the value of the discipline, friendship, respect, companionship and the work involved through being in a team.
Marcos Senna spoke about his humble origins in his native Brazil, of how he played football with bare feet in the streets and how he had to overcome a complicated personal situation to carve out a successful career in football. There were difficult moments which forced him to hang up his boots when he was just 15 years old, but finally, with work and sacrifice, he gained his reward by becoming a professional player. Senna explained to the young footballers, who filled the Espai d’Oci, how he was able to grow as a person through sport, finding a club like Vila-real, which became his family. The footballer, winner of the Europa Cup with the Spanish Team, advised the sports fans to practise football as a tool for better health, to keep persevering and to listen to the advice of their parents.
At the end of the event, the audience had an opportunity to ask questions, showing the football stars their curiosity and hopes, which brought a lot of smiles.
When the event ended, the Alcala-Alcossebre Council presented baskets of local products to Marcos Senna and Raúl Herrera, thanking them for participating in the talk.
