32 women from Alcala-Alcossebre took part in the Self-Defence Course, organised by the Social Welfare and Women’s Departments and run by officers from the Alcala-Alcossebre Local Police, Dánae Gauxachs and Joel Herrera.  Its good reception by the participants ensures that it will continue and, in fact,  the departments involved are planning another course after the summer, with more information being given, based above all on the basics of martial arts and to make the most of the abilities of each woman and daily objects to defend oneself.  The ages of the participants ranged from 24 to 62 years old.

The course lasted four sessions which were held in the Alcala Asociación de Jubilados and the Alcossebre CESAL and, as its fundamental aim, it demonstrated basic ideas about self-defence for women when faced by violent or attacking situations.  Local Police officer, Danae Gauxachs, explained that “they were shown how to deal with inevitable aggression, basic punches with a fist, hand or kicks, basic dislocations and how to find painful spots for the aggressor”.  One of the strangest subjects was teaching them how to use “fortuitous weapons”, i.e., everyday objects which can help to repel aggression, such as a handbag, an umbrella or an eyelash mascara tube, teaching the students that there are many resources for self-defence, whatever it may be or whatever your age or physical capacity”, she explained.

On the last day of the course, certificates were handed out to the participants who had made the best use of the course, embodied in questionnaires commenting on how well the tutors had done and the information contained in the course, as well as whether they wished for further courses to be available.

The Social Welfare and Women’s councillors, Desa Pitarch and Susan Guillamón, also gave their views emphasising that “the participants have learned a lot, enjoyed themselves and, above all, we have introduced them to a world in which they can continue training and improving their skills”.
