Alcala-Alcossebre Council municipal technicians have carried out a first evaluation of the economic cost of the damage suffered in the municipality following the red alert episode for rain and storms last week. A first valuation comes to around 3.5 million euros although it could be more, depending on how the agricultural harvests may have been affected and on exactly how much the infrastructure repairs which have to be carried out will cost.
The large expanse of the Alcala de Xivert municipality – the second largest in the whole of the province – means that the damage in the fields and rural roads is enormous. In fact, 250 kilometres of rural roads have been affected, meaning that the costs of repairing the damage are calculated to be as much as a million euros. Regarding the damage to the cultivated land, irrigation wells, margins, etc., this could be over 1.5 million euros. To this has to be added the harm to the harvests as, at today, it is estimated that 150 hectares remain flooded, which will damage the crops.
With reference to the infrastructure, the sea front was greatly damaged in areas such as the Cargador beach, the mouth of the river San Miguel, the La Coloma river bed and also in the camino de la Jorba and the Estopet river bed. In these areas, the asphalt will have to be repaired as, in some cases, it has completely disappeared due to the force of the water. Also sections of the wooden walkway and the fencing of the Shore Path received severe damage and sections along the beach will have to be completely rebuilt to make them passable again. In total, repairing all this damage could cost more than a million euros.
To these, damage suffered by individuals’ property has to be added. To make the processes easier in the case of specific lines being set up for assistance by other administrations, the Council has prepared a form for declaring the damage caused by the rain available to residents which they can fill in and take to the Alcala Council and the Municipal Offices in Alcossebre.
“Our initial priority after the rain was to get back to normality in the municipality. Now, we are going to work so that this extraordinary situation is taken into account by the administrations and that the assistance is considered to enable us to carry out the necessary repairs”, Mayor Francisco Juan pointed out and reminded that “the Diputación Provincial has already approved emergency aid for all the towns in the province, as well as increasing the plan for improving roads, so that we hope that both the Generalitat as well as central Government will collaborate and help us to overcome this catastrophe we have suffered”.
